One other thing about interviews or building your listenership (viewership, mothership)… the reason I listen to this podcast (as opposed to the 1UP Show) is because your views are authentic and unvarnished. That’s a big selling point. I would humbly suggest that you continue to focus on gamers, gamers’ opinions, and gamer culture. I don’t want to see ANY interviews with ANY industry insiders.

    Ever.

I don’t care how “big” the scoop is. Or how much of a “genius” the person is.

I don’t give a fuck what Peter Moore says. I don’t want to hear what Reggie says or Miyamoto. Is it because they are not interesting people? No, it’s because those industry people are so completely bound up by NDAs that you are almost always guaranteed 100% marketing bullshit. I’m sure Miyamoto would be fascinating to speak to in person, but all of the interviews with him are shit. Always “I’d love to, but I can’t talk about it” non-answers. The idiocy is the interviewers who continue to ask “no comment” questions and the readers who read it knowing full well that nothing will be said.

Gamers don’t require access. They’re a dime a dozen. But simply going down to the local EB and talking to some gamers is going to be infinitely more fascinating than sitting down with some icon of the dev community. No one is doing an effective job of really featuring the gamers (except the sad pseudo-celebrities like the “pro” gamers or the Frag Dolls).

  3. Lezbro Says:

Also, Kotaku, Joystiq, 1UP all had authenticity at one point, but they’ve all gone the route of trying to build up a “cast” of personalities. Sort of “My Adventures in the Game Industry.” Dtoid started out fine, but they seem to also be trending in this direction lately. I don’t mind the personality of the staff coming through — in fact, I much prefer it — but when it really starts to eclipse the game commentary in a big way, it gets old.

I guess I’m trying to say I like your “coupla gamers kicking back and shooting the shit” approach.

  4. Sunflower4000 Says:

Fragdolls can burn eternally, I fail to see their point. Plus, half of them are really horrendous looking. If you’re into the whole ‘girl gamer’ stuff and you’re ugly, don’t prance about in skimpy clothes. Nasty fucking whores. Kind of off-topic but why do girls think that if they’re into video games, they’re automatically supposed to be worshipped by gamers? Stupid.

    Lezbro:

Good points all around. I definitely don’t ever want to lose the whole “two guys shooting the shit” model, and I think we’ll definitely have to be cautious not to fall in the same sort of traps that other shows fall into. I was a little disappointed that Capcom is trying to point us to “community managers” instead of developers when trying to get interviews for Lost Planet, but you’re right, the possibility of getting marketing garbage is a lot higher with a dev or exec, and probably lower with a rank and file employee who was probably hired because he was a total fanboy (like us).

What I’d like to do with the interviews more is speak to the inner gamer of whoever we talk to. I mean, we’ll have to spend _some_ time on whatever they’re trying to shill — gotta get that plug out of the way — but then delve into side issues or cultural topics. Hopefully some of this comes through in the interview I did with Joe Cain of Pogo Games.

You should post in our forums where this kind of discussion can really get goin :).

    SunFlower4k:

Absolutely agreed on the whole fragdolls thing. I played next to one in the Guitar Hero competition at PAX and not only was she not hot, but she sucked too. Got knocked out of the first round.

Of course, the mixing of girls and games isn’t always so bad…

I think the whole mentality is reinforced by the general gamer populace going crazy about anything with girls and games. They feed off of it and try to live up to the image. It’s kind of like back in school where both Tobin and my majors had 10:1 male to female ratios. With all of the attention that the few girls got, they definitely had an attitude which would’ve been unrealistic in the “real world”. Must be a supply and demand thing.

But you’re not bitter or anything, eh, Yuzo? Hope those snotty CMU girls got knocked down a few notches?
